I am interested in the cycles, patterns, and forms that make up natural systems. The geometric shapes present in the structures of cells; in our bodies, in plants, and animals, can be found everywhere. From the tiniest molecules to the largest land masses, patterns and geometric shapes are repeated over and over. There are mathematical equations that cause the sun to rise or a leaf to grow in a particular way. My work reflects the beauty of these forms, the elegance of math, the simplicity, and practicality of their design. My work is an appreciation of these qualities, an attempt to bring meaning to them, and to find my place within it all. My process and materials reflect these concepts. I use natural materials; hand made oil paints, often from plant, mineral and animal sources. Beeswax is beautiful and holds mathematical patterns in it. It is created in hexagon forms and when melted, re-melted and manipulated, it makes its own patterns and formations. Because of this, it is very difficult to work with. I am always exploring with the medium and I am always learning. For me, this is the essence of painting; to be a student of the materials. My process reflects my exploration of natural forms, systems, and patterns as well as the history of natural sciences; to collect, categorize, and interpret the natural world. I am fascinated by that history, as well as my own process. I am inspired and amused by the idea that this process is essential to human life, and completely meaningless at the same time. The infinity of the universe is so huge compared to anything we could ever make up about it. Lisa ostapinski January 2003 |
